AHA (Vic) Members Take Front Seat in Urban List’s ‘Best Pubs in Melbourne 2023’ Guide

Simon Cassar from Urban List has recently published a comprehensive guide of the top pubs to visit in Melbourne for this year, and our members are at the forefront of the list.

For many years, pubs have been known as a place to gather with friends, savour a tasty parma, and indulge in some cold beers. Below are all AHA (Vic) members that have been mentioned in Urban List’s favourite picks, ranging from traditional carpeted venues that evoke nostalgia, to innovative establishments that challenge our preconceptions of what constitutes a welcoming local pub:

The Esplanade Hotel
ST KILDA

The Espy is truly unique – there’s no other pub quite like it. Originally established in 1878, the Hotel Esplanade has been an iconic fixture of St Kilda for decades. Now, after a revamp, The Espy has 12 bars spread across five levels, offering an impressive selection of handpicked wines, signature cocktails, and craft beers. With such a varied range of offerings, it’s easy to see why The Espy is considered one of the top pubs in Melbourne.

The Post Office Hotel

If you’re in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, you might already know about The Post Office Hotel. Situated on Sydney Road in Coburg, this establishment serves as a gathering place for both family and friends, offering a laid-back atmosphere and an excellent menu. It’s not just a pub, but also a music venue and brewery, making it the ideal spot to experience everything that we’ve missed in 2023.

Ascot Vale Hotel
ASCOT VALE

Located on the corner of Mt Alexander Road, the Ascot Vale Hotel offers a great selection of ice-cold beers and a welcoming atmosphere for good times. The 1875 building has been lovingly restored, resulting in a tasteful dining room and bar area featuring a blend of white brick and wood elements. The food at the Ascot Vale Hotel is everything you’d expect from a modern pub – classic dishes like schnitzels, steak sandwiches, and parmas are complemented by more inventive options such as Ascot dimmies with soy sauce and chili jam, and cheesy garlic bread. In addition to its culinary offerings, the pub hosts a trivia night for those who love to test their general knowledge.
