Bulletin 7: Good Friday and ANZAC Day Trading Conditions

GOOD FRIDAY TRADING HOURS

With the Easter long weekend commencing on Good Friday, 30 March 2018, all liquor licensees should check the conditions on their licence to determine whether Good Friday affects their trading hours.

Trading hours on the eve of Good Friday:

  • If your licence does not allow you to trade past midnight on Thursday night, then you must close at your normal time.
  • If your licence allows you to trade past midnight, but has a condition that excludes trading into the morning of Good Friday, then you must close at midnight.
  • If your licence allows you to trade past midnight on Thursday into Friday, and does not have a condition excluding trading into the morning of Good Friday, you can close at your normal time.

Unless otherwise stated on your licence, standard trading hours for Good Friday allow you to commence serving liquor from 12:00 noon, up to 11:00 pm.

Gaming venue operators are reminded that gaming machines must not be operated outside the trading hours permitted on their liquor licence.

ANZAC DAY TRADING RESTRICTIONS

The Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 stipulates trading restrictions for ANZAC Day (25 April). Please note that this year ANZAC Day falls on a Wednesday.

Liquor must not be sold or supplied between 3am and 12noon on ANZAC Day regardless of conditions which may be stated on a liquor licence.

Limited exceptions apply to licensed businesses that have obtained specific approval from the Director of Liquor Licensing to host an approved ANZAC Day-related event.

Exemptions also apply to the provision of liquor to “residents” and “guests of residents” of pubs and hotels providing accommodation. Such “residents” must be included on the Residents Register.

With regard to ANZAC eve trading arrangements, Tuesday 24 April trading hours into Wednesday 25 April trading hours stated on respective liquor licenses apply.
